Governors'
New Teacher Academy June 1-3, 2005
Teacher
Education Program Survey Results
New
teacher academies were held June 1-3, 2005 on the BHSU and DSU campuses.
The program for these academies was developed by the SD Department
of Education; each academy set aside time for a roundtable during
which first year teachers were able to visit with university faculty
from the institution from which they graduated about the strengths
and weaknesses of their program. Faculty from each university asked
questions specific to their programs. In addition a survey was developed
and used for data collection purposes. This survey asked first year
teachers to rate themselves on their level of preparedness in ten
different dimensions of professional expertise. These ten areas
are based on the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium
(INTASC) standards. NCATE requires that all accredited colleges/schools/departments
of education align their programs with these standards. The surveys
and roundtable discussions provided institutions with valuable feedback
regarding their teacher education programs. Faculty from eleven
institutions participated in the roundtables and 159 new teachers
completed the survey.
