Three
Universities Cooperatively Plan for Graduate Physics Degree
Three of South Dakota’s
public universities want to jointly offer a new graduate-level degree
in physics, building on the national visibility of the state’s
underground science and engineering laboratory at the former Homestake
Gold Mine.
New
Doctoral Program Explored at University of South Dakota
A new doctoral program in
a highly specialized field is in the works at The University of South
Dakota. University officials received the go-ahead from the South Dakota
Board of Regents to begin planning for a Ph.D. in history of musical
instruments.

Degree Programs Planned for Off-Campus Sites
The South Dakota Board of
Regents has approved two new degree programs to be offered at off-campus
locations, as well as started the process of planning for two more.
All four of the programs would be offered in Sioux Falls, and some would
also be offered at additional sites or by distance.
Dakota
State University Expands Academic Offerings
Dakota State University will
soon make available to students three more of its degree offerings completely
online. The Madison campus received permission from the South Dakota
Board of Regents to implement the new delivery options starting this
fall.

Approves Black Hills State M.S. in Integrative Genomics Participation
in Student Exchange Program
The Board of Regents approved
an agreement that will allow Black Hills State University’s masters
of science in integrative genomics to become part of the Western Regional
Graduate Program (WRGP) operated by the Western Interstate Commission
for Higher Education (WICHE).

Student Health Insurance Plan Approved
Students at South Dakota’s
public universities will soon have the option to purchase better health
insurance coverage at more affordable rates. The South Dakota Board
of Regents Friday approved a new managed care product to be available
to students this fall.
Non-Resident
Tuition Rate a Winner for South Dakota
When the South Dakota Board
of Regents in 2006 adopted lower tuition rates charged to all out-of-state
students, the concern was whether the state would lose money on the
deal. Two years later, those concerns have been laid aside. The non-resident
tuition rate is a winner for South Dakota public universities.

Science Facilities Move Forward
Construction and renovation
of 11 science facilities and laboratories on all six public university
campuses is ready to move forward after July 1. Building committees
have been set up, and campuses are selecting architects for their projects.

Student Groups Recognized
The South Dakota Board of
Regents recognized outstanding student groups from Northern State University.
Student
Athletes Excel at Public Universities
According to a report presented
to the Board of Regents, student athletes are doing as well or better
than non-athletes on campus.

Degree Programs Approved at BHSU and NSU
The South Dakota Board of
Regents approved new academic programs at Black Hills State and Northern
State universities, including a master’s degree in strategic leadership
at BHSU to be delivered over the Internet.

Six faculty members at South
Dakota public universities earned state grants to support their individual
research projects. The grants, totaling nearly $500,000, are part of
South Dakota’s continuing efforts to become a recognized leader
in research and technology
development.

Earn Funds to Support Lab Development at Homestake
The South Dakota Board of
Regents will award seven mini-grants to faculty members across the state
who have developed research projects to support science, engineering,
and education efforts associated with the new Sanford Underground Laboratory
at Homestake.

Education Task Force to Recommend Actions
Gov.
Mike Rounds has appointed nine members to a task force that will examine
South Dakota’s educational services for students who are deaf
and hard of hearing, and make recommendations to improve the effectiveness
and efficiency of those services.
